Sofia Macedo Costa de Oliveira

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Sofia is a rising senior in the Nutrition, Health, and Society BSPH program with a double major in Medical Anthropology. She is extremely passionate about global and public health, the double burden of malnutrition, and the nutrition transition in low- and middle-income countries. Her experiences volunteering at local farms and working with public health-oriented student organizations such as PIH – Engage have informed her desire to reduce food insecurity and create healthy, sustainable food systems. She is currently working with Dr. Taillie and Fernanda Olivato to create and conduct a virtual grocery store experiment in Brazil. She has previously worked with Dr. Becky White, Associate Professor of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill, researching HIV/AIDS PrEP programs for formerly incarcerated individuals. Outside of the office and the world of research, Sofia is a cycling instructor at Purvelo and an Operations Ambassador at the Student Recreation Center.
