Monitoring Changes in the U.S. Food Supply

Grocery shopperWe have been tracking how products from packaged food manufacturers have evolved since the mid-2000s using time-specific nutrition label information. Introduction of new or reformulated products can be an industry response to secular trends or to proposed or implemented regulations or industry pledges. Some noted trends we are able to describe include changes over time in:

  • Added sugars
  • Low-/Non-caloric sweeteners or non-nutritive sweeteners
  • Whole grains
  • Sodium and potassium
  • Differences between national brands vs. store brands
  • Shopping patterns

Previously, we have also evaluated industry pledges such as the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation’s marketplace pledge, and assess the role of retailers.
