Alyssa Walker-Porter

FERN fellow, 2025

Alyssa joined the Global Food Research Program as a 2025 FERN fellow between her second and third years George Washington University, where she double-majors in nutrition, with a concentration in nutrition science, and biology. She is passionate about reducing nutrition related diseases, especially in expecting mothers, children, and low-income communities. She is working with GFRP doctoral student Jonathan Lara-Arévalo to research the relationship between food insecurity and obesity in low- and middle-income countries. In the future, Alyssa hopes to pursue a Master of Public Health in Nutrition, become a registered dietitian, and engage in research to improve nutrition education and nutrition policy across the globe.

My “go-to” comfort food is… pineapple.

My least liked food is… cheese. I despise the smell, the taste, everything about it!

My favorite food-related smell is… the smell of the kitchen after a fresh batch of cookies.
