HWCF Evaluation Baseline Report

The UNC Food Research Program released the baseline methods for the current study to evaluate and measure whether members of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF) will meet their pledge to reduce 1 trillion calories from the marketplace by 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015 in the article titled “Food Companies’ Calorie-Reduction Pledges to Improve U.S. Diet” in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine released January 17 2013. Our findings show that HWCF companies accounted for approximately 25% of calories consumed in the U.S. in 2007. The 1.5 trillion calorie-reduction pledge accounts for 0.8% of the calories sold across all consumer packaged goods food and beverage brands in 2007, and would be about 14 calories per day per capita.

The UNCFRP monitoring system will not only allow for evaluation of the HWCF 1.5 trillion calorie pledge, but will also improve understanding of how changes in the food supply affect the diets of U.S. children and adolescents.
